Design Research | 1&99% Project

Posted March 20th, 2010 in All, Society oriented by Vincent

The module Research Methodology consisted of a multidisciplinary project. Teams where put together with people from Communication & Multimedia Design, Photography, Animation, Audio / Video, Product Design and Graphic Design. The goal of the project was to develop a product which would combat the stigmatising view a lot of people have of people suffering from schizophrenia.

We performed our research using Cultural Probes (small pre-made parcels containing specific assignments for the respondents). I made a parlour game (loosely based on the game of life), intending to bring us researchers more in touch with our the target group and to be able to obtain research results in a playful and non-provocative manner.

In the end we ended up making an installation which showed the number of people passing along and the percentage of them that would develop schizophrenia at some point in their lives. We also made a head-shaped contraption which could be used to show which influences have an effect on the development of schizophrenia.
